I need Diamond cross info...

Kevin Saunders Jun 17, 2003 03:46 PM

There's been a bunch in the classifieds lately and I saw a few at the last herp show. I'm going to the show again in 2 weeks and I'd like to know more about these guys before I get up there. Does anyone know approximately how long these get? I'm assuming they reach adult sizes somewhere between those of jcps and diamonds, but I'd like some input. Also, what temperatures should they be kept at? I recall reading that diamonds need to be kept cooler than other carpets, though I haven't read up on them lately to be honest. Do the crosses reflect this as well or are they fine at normal jcp temperatures? If any of you have experience with these, feel free to offer advice on anything I haven't asked about as well-I haven't seen much information on them. Thanks for any help.

OK I am not going to flame you for having interests other than mine and I have some experience that could help you so here goes.

I once went to a snake show to get a JCP. I saw one for cheap and said, what the heck. It was a male and it grew to a shade over seven feet long in just three years. Though it wasnt heavy bodied it was still pretty good size. Also the colors sucked. Very dingy. To this day whenever I think about the snake I wonder, why would anyone want this when they could have a pure jungle, or diamond, both of which IMO are much more attractive animals then a cross. Now there is no doubt some can be pretty, but I think the differences between the two are what make them attractive. I would expect a male to get 6=7 feet and a female about a foot longer then that. Hope I could help.

I have since traded the snake because it had no place in my breeding program, but while I had it the husbandry requirements I used where the same as a JCP minus a degree or two, and it thrived.

I have two DXJs. They are beautiful snakes, but there are a lot of problemes with crosses that have been discussed many times on this forum. For instance my biggest female, pictured, could easily be confused with a jungle. She could also be bred with a jungle, and the babies sold as pure jungles. This snake is my biggest carpet. Even bigger than a coastal female of mine. I'm not exactly sure of her length, but I think she's well over 8' long. She weighs over 10 lbs. As for how I maintain them, I treat them exactly like jungles and they've done fine.

I'm mainly looking for an IJ at the next show, but I thought it'd be wise to have info on the diamond/jungles in case one caught my eye. I'll probably try to avoid them if they get that large though. Thanks again for the help.
