the amazon and yellowfoots

rdbartlett Jun 17, 2003 04:02 PM

the only tortoise we see regularly in Amazonian Peru is the yellow-footed tortoise, Geochelone (Chelonoidis) denticulata.
Most that we find are rather near the forest trails and most are hatchlings or juveniles. occasionally a fair-sized adult, such as this 16 incher is found. yellowfoots are kept by many villagers, but sadly (from a turtle-lovers viewpoint) most are ultimately destined for the stewpot. when we find these tortoises in villages we generally buy all and release them in rainforest habitat.

I love those big jungle yellowfoots! Some of them are also really beautiful too. Although many people assume they and redfoots have the same habitat and habits, they are really quite different.
