Are Jacksons good for a beginner?

draco May 22, 2004 01:09 AM

Hi - I'm new to Chameleons, but not reptiles. I've done lots of research, both in books, and in this forum. I'm also preparing an elclosure, before I bring anything home. I was just wondering what people thought about starting with Jacksons as an introduction to the Chameleon world. I live in So. California, and plan to keep them outside.
Thanks in advance for your comments.
Ken

ALOHA,
I'VE RAISED JACKSONS NOW FOR NEARLY 11 YEARS. THEY ARE VERY CALM AND FAIRLY EASY TO CARE FOR. IF YOU HAVE A BREEDING PAIR, BE READY FOR THE LIVE BIRTH FACTOR! AND LIKE THE POSTING, SOMETIMES THEY DON'T LOOK GRAVID, BUT REALLY ARE! THEY STILL NEED THE SPECIAL CARE LIKE ANY OTHER CHAM!!

I think Jacksons are fine for beginners. The reason alot of people consider them harder to keep than veileds or panthers has alot to do with them needing lower temperatures, which are traditionally harder to get than high ones (easier to heat than it is to cool). I've kept Jacksons as one of my first species and did good with them. Let me know if you have any other questions.
