Food Question

AlliMarie Jun 17, 2003 04:12 PM

Hey all! Hope everyone is doing good! Everybody here is great! Nemo looks like a totally different ig! I'll have to get some updated photos loaded, but he's filled out quite a bit. Still can make out his hip bones, but nothing like when I first found him. Anywho... Was wanting to try a few different foods with Nemo. How do I prepare squash? I picked up some Butternut and Buttercup squash the other day, and got home, and realized I had no clue on what parts to give him. I've always gotten it pre-shredded with the igs in the clinics, but never knew what part of the squash it was. Dumb question, I know... But I'm sure Nemo would appreciate any help any of you may provide. So, do I peal it, or... I really don't know. Never eaten squash myself, so... Yaya.
Thanks!

i normally just peel it like a carrot, or a better way to do it is use a cheese grader and grade it down, that way you use all the squash, unlike peeling where you only use soo much of it! have fun!

another way to prepare acorn and butter nut squash, and even pumpkin is to, pre heat the oven to 300, and put the squash in there, cut in half and open side down, once the temp hits 300, turn the oven back off, and let the squash sit for about 20 to 30 minutes, when you take it out the peeling will come right off......then shred the pieces

When I prepare butternut squash, I usually put a few slits into the side of a whole squash, then put it in the microwave for about 30 seconds. This just makes it softer. I don't slice or shred the whole thing at once, because it goes bad faster that way. So I cut off the very tip and throw that away. Then I cut off a couple inch thick slice from the top. Peel that slice, that shred the peeled slice. I cut more slices when necessary, and find that the butternut squash lasts longer than any of the other foods that go in the salad.

I cut the squash open and remove all the seeds, then steam the halves in the microwave or on the stove for a bit. Once the squash softens a little, the peeling comes off easier. After it's peeled, I run it through my food processor with the other salad ingredients.
