mysticaldiva May 22, 2004 09:18 AM

i just bought an '02 anery about a week ago. he likes to sleep on the side of his tank that doesn't have the heat pad. when i get him out, he's always cold to the touch. do u think it's too hot on the other side? he's getting ready to shed, does that have anything to do with it?

thanks,
Rachel

This is one indicator of warm end being too warm... but not necessarily. I highly recommend a temp gun... if you plan on getting any more snakes, then the purchase is warranted. If the warm end is warm to you (that is, you can detect the heat yourself through the palm of your hand), then it's likely too warm. If this is a heat pad for therapeutic use (has low-med-high settings), then use low. I not, then try to insulate the heat a bit.

It will be useful if you describe the set up and heating device.

I have 2 corns and a milk snake that are always on the cool side of their tanks. When I pick them up they are cool also. Mine are doing great since I've had them in the same setup for over a year now. When I handle them they will start to warm up and become more active.
If your temp on the warm side is in the 80's should be ok. Mine are in the 80's and have been fine. Cool side is in the 70's. I have the UTH's with lights on during the day. Both same side. At night the lights go out but UTH are on 24/7. This has worked for me fine.
I don't think your snake being in shedding mode has anything to do with him being on the cool side all the time. Like I said mine are on the cool side more then the warm side. They do come out and wonder around the warm side at night.
Shouldn't handle him while he is in sheding mode. Takes anywhere from 10-14 days from start to finally shedding. My milk and jungle carpet python both shed the other night. My python, however, is on her warm side quite often. They like the heat more. Hope this helps since I'm no expert but love my snakes. :0)
