Update on Teo's eyes

Gunilla May 22, 2004 09:42 AM

Hi,
I know I don't post here for a while, but I just wanted to update you all about Teo and her "weird looking eyes". For you that haven’t seen the pics, please go here.

Last Wednesday I took Teo to the vet in Stockholm. It took me forever to get there. Normally it is a 3½-hour drive but since it was a holiday on Thursday (I don’t know if you have that in USA?) it was tons of traffic, and it took me 5 hours. And I ended up in a terrible thunderstorm with hail, thunder, lightning and very heavy rain. On top of that it was rush hour in Stockholm when I arrived. I thought I left my place to have *plenty* of extra time – but I stepped into the vets office exactly on time.

The vet checked Teo for “everything”. They took a blood sample, fecal sample (luckily Teo pooped the same morning! X-ray and of course an examination of her eyes. They found absolutely nothing. No parasites (hurray!), the blood work was excellent – her kidneys and liver were in perfect condition and the X-ray showed nothing. The vet couldn’t find anything wrong with her eyes either. In a way this is both bad and good news. It is good that they didn’t find anything wrong with her – but it is *something* wrong - and the vet agreed that Teo’s eyes didn’t look normal. The vet said, “if it wasn’t for her eyes, I would say that this is one of the healthiest dragons I have ever seen”.

The only thing that “can be something wrong” is that her “red blood cells”. They “split” and “divide themselves”. Do you understand what I mean? I have no idea how to describe this in English. There are red and white blood cells and when the white ones are “divide themselves” it is usually a sign of some kind of infection. The vet has never seen anything like it. It is common that the “white blood cells” “split” when it is an infection present, but she had never heard of the red blood cells “splitting” and growing in numbers. Since the vet didn’t know what it could be she will consult an “blood expert” from USA that is working in Sweden. I will get the results from that next week. Hopefully it isn’t anything serious… The vet will also consult an eye specialist and hear what they’ll say.

So I don’t really know more today than I did last week… But the vet ensured me that Teo wasn’t in pain and didn’t suffer at all – THAT was wonderful to hear! I guess I just have to wait and see if I get more information. If not – well, I just have to let Teo be and hope that her eyes won’t get any worse…

Well that sounds like pretty good news. I mean, I know how frustrating it can be to have no clear answers, but I think it's good to know she isn't in any pain or immediate danger. Sounds like you found a knowledgable vet who is willing to do everything possible to help you. I've known too many who would just say, "Huh, that's wierd, sorry can't help you," and send you on your way.

I hope the blood specialist comes back with more answers. Keep us posted and good luck to you and your sweet girl.

Thanks for the update Gunilla, I've been wondering about Teo and wishing her the best. Although I'm sorry there is a problem with Teo's eyes, maybe Teo will end up teaching us all something. I'm just really glad Teo belongs to you
