Surprise Surprise Western Hog feeding issues

md42007 May 22, 2004 11:06 AM

Hey everyone got a problem maybe someone can help me with. Story goes.... I purchased my western hog almost a month ago from a reputable pet store... on the day i bought him he ate in the pet store.... he ate the mouse with no hesitation... I brought him home took him out of the 2 1/2 gallon tank he was in... (the tank came with the snake).... and put him in a 10 gallon... Since then he will not eat... i have tried pinkies goldfish, pinkies scented with goldfish etc. he wants nothing to do with it. When i go to feed him i dig him out (all he does is ball up under the substrate) and he false strikes at any food item in the tank.... how long can a hog go without eating and when should it become a concern.... also any tips would really help... Frogs?
Thanks

Simple Fix! Try braining the pinkie. Works everytime with those stubborn feeders! Also maybe try more hideouts.

Do not scent. Here is what you should try first:

Get a small container like a chip dip container, coolwhip, etc.-something that isn't clear and is small. Punch holes in the lid. Put the snake in it with a regular washed, warm f/t (or whatever you use) pinkie. Put the container containing the pink and snake in a warm place that will get dark at night. Do this in the afternoon around 4:00-7:00pm. Keep the snake in there until morning with the pink. In the morning the pink should be gone. It works most of the time. Just keep trying this. Hogs are very good at fasting and will normally eat when they know they need it. Just try not to get frustrated over it like I do sometimes.

Normally, there is ne need to scent for Westerns...especially with anything fishy....they don,t eat fish. Try unscented in a small, dark container overnight. You may need to brain the pink, or lizard scent. NO FISH

My stubborn little male western went months without eating. But T-Rex changed his mind. Tonight he ate a fuzzy and wanted more.

And, as always my 2 cents. My hog will not eat a goldfish, but but a ruby red (another type feeder) in and she goes nuts. After she eats a few then scent a mouse with one. Now I don't scent at all but feed live hoppers. She eats great now, but when I first got her she would not eat at all, just like yours.

My advice is try all the ideas everyone has until you find the one that works for your hog. All of these things have worked for us, one is bound to work for you....
