dead IJ juvie. what happened?

professional May 22, 2004 11:31 AM

Several minutes ago, my one year old IJCP died in my hands. Until the last few days, she has been a healthy snake. I have been noticing a weezing sound which leads me to suspect a respritory infection. also in the last few minutes of her life (maybe earlier as well, but not noticed til now) she held her mouth open and as far as i could tell, it was to breath. As i held her to inspect her and figure out what was wrong, she just layed limp in my hands, barely moving at all. I have also noticed a "buildup" or phecal matter around and in the ventral area. When i attempted to clean this out, was when she opened her mouth wide. It never closed until she died. Her last feed was two weeks ago, which she happily and healthaly participated in. IF you have any idea what has happened to my girl, please let me know. What could i have done to correct this before it was too late?

Sorry to read about your loss. Could of been a respiratory infection. I've read any snake with open mouth breathing usually has respiratory problems. As far as the fecal... Maybe it injested some substrate and was impacted???
I would get a necropsie (sp?) since it was a young snake if it were mine.
I'm just a pet owner but love my snakes.
