Wow. I thought for sure it was some sort of citrus until you cut it open. I'm stumped now. Definately NOT apple, though!

It could be a crab apple tree, we have them all over here. They are edible if thats what it is. It looks like it to me, but I am no tree expert.

I can check them out *REAL* good!
I looked at your pictures and about fell out of my chair!!!!!
hehe, they are my favorite fruit from when I was a kid, but impossible to find much any more in stores in Florida and many of the natural growing ones were wiped out by a blight 20 or more years ago here or heavy frost. It's called a guava and is in the citrus family.
As a kid growing up here they were all over the place in the wild and we loved them.
They are considered an exotic fruit in the group with starfruit, kiwi, Kiwanos, Papayas, Passion Fruits, Pomegranates.
I still think you need to send me some to be sure

it is a close relative to the guava and taste somewhat alike.
There are many hybrids of guavas, but the one with the white meat is usually of the surpreme varitey and there is one of those that is a hybrid that has one or no seeds.
My favorite is the pink guava, but I have not seen one of those in years, it has a soft meat inside and loads of tiny seeds not in a pod

Not an apple looks to me like it might be in the peach/plum family but it is wierd looking I do not know it off hand. If you have a county agricultural program as we have here in AZ I would take a sample there or to the nearest college with an agriculture program. They love trying to stump their students. A good plant nursery might help too.
Don't suppose you live in Central Florida, do you??? What you have there is a loquat tree, very common in Florida landscaping. Yes, a member of the guava family I believe, and quite tasty. Our beardie enjoys them on occassion.
Michelle
we are in south florida. Its not a loquat, we have one of those too however. I am pretty sure it is a rose apple but I am sending some to Cheri for her inspection
