my phantasticus died....

Scaley_Pimp May 22, 2004 01:54 PM

this morning i woke up to find out my satanic passed away. i had cleaned her tank last week and took her out.... i noticed that she couldn't walk, she was wobbling all over the place. im pretty sure that had something to do with it because she was perfectly healthy before that, the fattest little thing i had ever seen. what could have happened to make her wobble around like that?

Possibly improper supplementation, lighting, humidity, or parasites. More info on how you took care of it would be helpful.

my female phantasticus feel ill more than a month ago, even stopped using her hind legs. shes got enough strength in her front limbs to carry herself around tbe branches, and even still eats. its tricky with these guys, and tough to find a vet who knows what to do about stuff like this.

I have had it happen on other species of gecko. These conditions are most likely caused by a mold somewhere in the enclosure. I am not sure of the exact type, but the surface area it can cover and still do serious harm is arund 5 cm. It attacks the nervous system like some molds do in humans and causes atrophy to local nerves and eventually to the muscles. The nerve damage is permanent and premature death is mostlikely inevitable. The mold is generally white to blue-green. Prolonged exposure definitely increases the chances of such situations. A way to prevent this would be to work on the air circirculation/humidity and possibly temperature.

I hope we can all come up with some good answers to help each other figure all these things out.

The mold post below is quite interesting I had read about that on another forum the other day!

Again, sorry you had to lose her.

thanks guys for the help. i purchased her from a phantasticus breeder at the last white plains show, and it was the healthiest fattest one i had ever seen so got her...i was keepin her in a 10 gal for the three or four weeks i had her...the humidity was pretty much a constant 90% , i had a uv light that i got especially for herps, and there was never realy any mold except for on it's crap. i dusted the crix little bit every time i fed her wich was about every other day or so i would throw a half dozen. i was thinkin it might have lunged for a cricket or mealworm and had gotten some damage, but i really dont know
