Native Moss?

devious_froggy May 22, 2004 04:34 PM

I just finished seting up a viv. using all native moss (i live in vancouver, and im not sure of the scientific name) eventually, when my finantial situation improves i'd like to add a pair of darts (at least a year away)

anyways, my questions are:

1)is there any way to remove parasites ect.. from the moss, will this take time? or will it ever happen?

2) i know that the usual moss everyone uses needs lots of light from very close up, but the stuff i found was in a "temprate rain forest", in heavy shade. so should i have high intensity lights, but shade the moss??? or just have full on light? if so how many watts? what type?

thanx for the help!!

personally I wouldn't use any native moss. Most moss that comes from temperate reigons requires a dormant peroid during the winter. So the moss will eventually die after a year or so unless you freeze your vivarium.
as for parasites I don't think there's a very high risk for parasites. but it will bring in a lot of bacteria and small critters that can help bring a good balance to the vivarium. Your frogs may enjoy eating them too.
all the tropical species of moss need lots of light but some temperate species don't. I had one friend use moss he had found and all the moss in the shade thrived (for about a year... no dormant period) while the moss in light died.
i hope this helps
