is my beardie fat?

carrotfairy Jun 17, 2003 04:46 PM

i swear my beardie is a piglet. he's about 14 inches snout to tail and i swear he has jowls...he will eat anything anytime anyplace. yesterday i started giving him frozen, thawed crickets and figured he wouldn't touch them...yeah, whatever. he hogged down as usual. how can i tell is he's too fat? cause , honestly he looks too fat to me. this picture is about 2 weeks old. i think he's 4 or 5 months old.

i don't know if you can tell by this pic. i swear he was holding it in....lol JK...he was trying to flatten himself out and be all big and bad with his non existant black beard....poor kid.

In the wild, bearded dragons are bulky and tough looking. Your beardie looks great and it's a good sign that he has a healthy appetite. I wouldn't worry. It's when they stop eating that you worry. As long as the prey size is smaller than the width between his eyes, you don't have anything to worry about.

Now this is a big dragon!!!

He doesn't look fat to me either. He's still young though, he has plenty of time to catch up. LOL

This is my chunky kid. He has a big belly and he hasn't even eaten yet.

I don't think your beardie is fat at all, maybe a bit on the slim side but at that age he can suddenly bulk up especially after his next shed.

Below is a picture of my own bearded dragon at 13 inches and about 5 months old, which should make a good comparison for you.

Here's another one where he isn't dangling from his log.
