New (and First) Chameleon ?'s

Cory21 May 22, 2004 08:30 PM

So tomorrow I bring home my first chameleon I'm quite excited! Its a baby Two-horned Chameleon. The tank is all ready for him.

The tank is a 45gal tall Oceanic Lizard Lounge. Its filled with Jungle Vine, and tropical plants (herp safe).

I would just like to know how to give it water. I know I have to mist it twice a day, but how does it drink? I know they don't drink from standing water.

Thank you,
Cory

uh oh, you said the magic word, the people around this forum don't like the term "tank" for many reasons. i would reconsider the type of reptile you get for that tank, a chameleon isn't going to do well

Why isn't a tank good for a chameleon?

Below is the exact tank that I have (Except mine is black oak). As you can see, only the front is a solid pane of glass for clear viewing. The sides are screens, and the back has 4 ventilation holes. It was made specifically for chameleons. The top is also screen, with a built-in heatlamp, which is protected by a black screen cone to protect the chameleon from burning themselves. The top is 75% screen, and the front portion has a glass folding lid with a lock on each side.

Will a chameleon drink droplets that form when misting? And is it best to place a dish with dusted crickets in the cage, or just let the crickets roam?

Thank you,
Cory

Tanks are not really as good becasue the glass causes ventilation issues. if your sides are screen it should be ok but it brings up other problems. Often just the site of a chameleons reflection in the glass casues unwanted stress. Also the glass casues heat problems and trouble with regulating humidty. This i know from personal experiance. i was 12 and bought a chameleon on a whim and it ended up dying within days becaues of the whole glass thing

With a tank you are going to have problems with heat and ventilation. Here's a VERY helpful link to get you going in the right direction.
