More than i can take!

srsnakes May 22, 2004 09:13 PM

So as many of you already know I spend my "free" time volunteering at a reptile store which isn't always up to par so to speak but today was just more than I could take. At this store we take in animals that are unwanted by their owners and usually green iguanas and red tail boas are top on the list of returns. So today one of the other guys in the store came to me with a rather large bag and told me it was a red tail that someone had dropped off and that he thought it wasn’t in the best of health. I happened to be feeding the baby corn snakes at the moment so I took the bag and set it at my feet until I finished the corns. It wasn’t more than 30 seconds after I set the bag down that I hear the tell tale signs of a RI coming from the bag... Heavy breathing that was very loud and almost sounded like a hiss more than a RI. It was at this point that I asked the guy that gave the bag to me if he had looked at the snake before we took it in, he told me no, but he thought the guy was shady and that he kept insisting that we pay for the animal, which isn’t our policy, but ended up just leaving the snake on the counter and remarking "you deal with him" as he walked out the door. So after hearing this I was scared as to what condition the animal would be in as I opened the bag, but none of my expectations could have prepared me for what I saw inside. To start with the scales, the snake was covered in about 3 layers of old shed from head to tail, then there was severe scale rot from about half way down his tummy to the tip of the tail and the tail was missing about 4 inches which for a full grown snake red tail leaves a quarter size bleeding, gapping wound at the end of his tail. Then on to the mites and one tick which was latched to his head behind his eye, but the worse part was when I got the face. The face of this poor snake was covered from about a half inch in front of his eye to half inch under his bottom jaw with a large pussy scab that would not allow the animal to breath out of his nostrils but also wouldn’t allow him to open the front part of his mouth so the only form of breathing he could do was by expelling the air through the side vents of the scab... Upon seeing this I just broke down and started crying for this animal. I immediately called our reptile vet and was on my way to the office with the cell phone in the other hand. After a long consult with the vet and some baytril for the obvious infection he had everywhere on his body we sexed him and found our he was a she. Then came the peeling of the scab. With me holding this poor baby girls head the vet applied some Neosporin and started peeling the snake scab off in order to allow her to open her mouth. She was rail skinny and I could tell she was weak and cold... After what seemed like forever the vet got the scab off and sealed the wound with a "blue concrete mixture" the vet told me to keep a close eye on her and that I was to finish the baytril injections and keep her heat high and her home clean. The concrete substance will help her heal over the bone which was exposed on the top of her face and the bottom jaw actually turned out looking okay. I need a name for this little girl and I want to know if I am justified in filing animal abuse charges against the prior owner . I already filed charges so it won’t matter to me if you say no I shouldn’t but I feel that poor snake deserves some level of revenge for the crap that was done to her. I told the other worker there and she felt I was totally out of line for filing charges and her biggest concern was that there would be repercussions to the store about this man not wanting to come in anymore and purchase anything... My feels about it are, if I ever see that man near another animal again I will need to be held back from ripping his face off like this poor snake had done to her... Sigh... im sorry im just really frustrated with the level of insanity that people can lower themselves too... I need some comments and I need a good name for her. As soon as she is mite free she will be coming home with me since I was the one who paid the 482.00 vet visit... So any advice would be good.. And a good name for this lucky little girl. .. Anyways thank you for reading and commenting on my day..

Sincerely,
Rose

I suppose it is good fortune for the boa that she happened to cross your path, Rose, so maybe you should just call her "lucky". As far as filing cruelty charges, I truly understand your sentiment for doing so. I suppose you just have to follow your conscience and do what you feel in your heart to be the right thing to do. Just be aware of the consequences of your choice. Best of luck to you and your rescue!

Kinda corny but I would call her Phoenix with her getting a second chance and all. I would agree with you on the sentiment you had in tryin to get some sort of vindication for the animal. The fact that your co worker feared repurcusions on the store is understandable as well. I wish her a steady recovery and I can also hope the previous owner has come to his senses and realized this is the wrong hobby for him.

Well being in southern california i know that the charges will be dropped for some reason or another, but i just wanted to let this person know that what they have done is wrong in all senses and that i dont believe he should have the right to own another animals for a few years until he "grows up" some. I am leaning towards Persephone for a name, Cheesy but you know that i am a big greek mythology fan. Thank you all for your help and i will update with some pictures as soon as possible. I dont know that i will persue the charges any further for the sake of the store i guess.. it breaks my heart to see something like this but i know that it will be a waste of my time, i think more than anything i was so upset that i just couldnt see straight and atleast this snake will have a bright future and im happy to see that.. Thank you all again...

Sincerely,
Rose

Why couldn't you continue with the abuse charges as an individual not involving the store? If you took pics of her before she was treated, they should show a horrible mess of an animal with obvious abuse. I'm not familiar with CA laws concerning abuse of animals, but you might get him charged with a nice fine at least. You have gone to a lot for her already and she needs a little retribution.

how about the name lucky lucey, or maby Mika or meka. jsut some random thoughts

willykink May 24, 2004 01:24 AM

that almost made me cry just reading that horrible description of that snake, imho you are FULLY justified pursuing the abuse charges against that gentleman...that is pure neglect to let an animal get that bad before deciding he just didnt want it anymore

would love to see pics of her during the healing process and especially when shes 100% healthy
good luck with her

The level of abuse in that case in my opinion 100% warrants that charges be filed. Way to go for doing it. I am glad to see the poor mistreated animal is now in hands that will show her the respect and attention that is needed to allow for a comfortable existance while in our possession.

Hi Rose,

I actually work in a pet store full time and I see this kind of thing with more than just herps. It is SO frustrating for me to see some of the things people do to animals without any regard to to what the animal goes through. The only comfort I take is that customers will come to our store just because they know we will rescue almost anything that is legal, no joke, I had a guy call me to see if we would be interested in buying polar bear cubs! I am very lucky in that I have a reptile guy in my town who knows more about herps than anyone I've met to date. I run into the same problem from my superiors that we should just take the animals and let the perp walk, but believe me, there have been time I've reported people too, and you should take pride in the fact you stand up for your beliefs. So you lose a bad customer, let him get his stuff elsewhere is my feeling.

I've personally rescued 8-10 boas myself, so far all but one have survived and have thrived for me. One was actually a gift from Stuart that he posted here a few years ago that had a cyst on it's nose. I named him Cyrano and he is really doing well, not to mention the fact he may be het albino, thank you very much Stuart! Keep up the good work and remember there are others that think like you!

Lucky sounds like the perfect name!! As for filing charges I really do not blame you, it is a real shame people for what ever reason get animals then treat them in this manner. The only negative I could see is that if word spreads about the neglect charges other people considering bringing in an animal they can no longer care for may be scared away (but this is a remote chance). Either way you are doing a GREAT job!!

That is truly sad.I am happy the poor guy was dropped off into the hands of an angel.I wish you both the best of luck and a speedy recovery for Lucky...Paul

betsey, aboo, Beatrice (my snakes name it sounds like greek mythotical so i thought you might like it for your snake )

Eric East May 23, 2004 07:40 AM

I'm not knocking you, you have the right to do what you feel is best. However, I believe the best thing for this poor animal would've been euthanasia. It may still die & you're out nearly $500.
Sencondly, I would persue the abuse charges. Do you know the individuals name? There is NO way I would let any concern for this store's well being get in the way of that. Why should you care? A) you stated that you volunteer. What are they going to do fire you? B) you stated they are sub par. maybe this will be a wake up call for them as well!

Eric-
Well it was a huge option... Euthanasa, and im sure it still is an option, but Steve and I dont really have any financial worries right now and i feel that it was the right thing to do for her. She may still have to be put to sleep but atleast i will know the last days of her life where in a home that she deserved and in a place that was comfortable for her. I know that it probably wasnt the most financially sound thing to do with 500.00 but i will live with the reprocussions of that alot easier then i will be able to live with that little girls image in my mind. As far as the charges go.. i know this scum bags name and i know he will be back in the store, BUT i dont see how the other employee could be so thoughtless about the condition of the snake and not about the a$$ that did this to her. I do not in any sense care about hurting the reputation of the store. It gets its reputation from animals that it keeps there and that will speak enough but i just felt that it was very "profit motivated" for the other girl to worry about the store being hurt by my actions. I thought it would look better upon the store that we wouldnt sit by and let people get away with actions like these. Sorry everyone im just a little up-ie still...I get the pictures of her uploaded but i will put a warning up it not something everyone will want to see, and another problem with the charges is i didnt take pictures of her when she came in so the full extent of the damage isnt noticable. Thank you everyone for the advice... I still need this lucky little girl a name but other than that i will update you this afternoon when i bring her home.

Sincerely,
Rose Hipskind

Rose, my personal favorite is "milagro" which means "miracle" in Spanish. I hope she pulls thru!! Thank god for loving people like you. All the best Laura Cox

The store should not be concerned about their business. With customers like that, who needs enemies? Personally, I like Persephonie (sp?). She should be named something pretty like that or Princess or Jewel...something pretty.
