Is that a garter snake? Are they grumpy?
...garter, one of the few snakes we see in this part of VA. This one had a bit of an attitude, but most are pretty docile. The good thing is, they come in a pretty amazing variety of patterns and colors around here. All of them I've seen have been attractive by garter standards... This one had very nice metalic bronze/gold side scales, shimmery and pearlescent...all washed out by the flash, of course. We have one big one (who occasionally puts in an appearance) that has a striking blue dorsal stripe. Hey, its not Arizona!

...these Reds are everywhere. We see lots of Cave salamanders (look similar but much longer and more slender) and Slimys also.

...fresh DOR Black Ratsnake found a few hundred yards down the road from our driveway. Drat.
