I utilize/have utilized many different types of hides for my arboreal monitors(prasinus complex). Some that I have used, and some that I still use are:
*cork bark attached to the wall-they'll love this, as they can wedge themselves in there tight..
*cork tubes- they use these, however they prefer the spaces in between the cork bark flats a bit better
*cockatiel, or parrot nesting boxes
*solid colored(not clear) rubbermaids/sterilites with a hole cut for access
*plywood stacks attached vertically to the sides of the cage

All of these seemed to have been liked by my monitors, however in my experience, the cork flats(not completely flat) attached to the walls was favored the most. I also use a lot of fake plants in my tree monitor enclosures, which they will sometimes use to hide amongst, as well as sleep on. My male beccari likes to use a big fluffy fern as a pillow/mattress...

So, you can use some of the ones I mentioned, or get creative... as long as it is someplace that they can feel tight and secure in.. While they will probably use it if there's nothing else available, they don't like hide areas that have a lot of space and are unconfining.. Think tight.. I hope this helps a bit, good luck with your new cage. Keep that humidity up!...

Take care,

I'm not sure I am familiar with what a habba hut is.. Is it that zoo med or exo terra product that is half a coconut with a tiny hole used for poison dart frogs to nest in? Without seeing or knowing exactly what this product is, I'm going to say no; for I have not seen a worthy product for monitor lizards manufactured by any of the big name suppliers...

In all actuality, I don't think there is anything that rivals corkbark when it comes to arboreal hides.. Now, I do realize that you have a rudy, which do get bigger than my tree monitors, however you should be able to apply the cork to them, just keep their larger size in mind.. if you go to the caging/supplies classifieds on this website, there are a bunch of people selling cork and cork tubes... it's relatively cheap, and invaluable to a monitor keeper.. You could also check the local shows; I know there's a guy who comes up here to the shows in the NE ever so often with a plethora of cork...for dirt cheap too.. I also have a connection with the local silk plant designer in my town; I got a bunch from them for practically nothing(heck, after all, I've spent a fortune on synthetic plants from them)...

Post a pic of this habba hut, or describe it for us, but I have a feeling that it is either just a half of a hollowed out log or something..not something that will give them the tight, secure feeling...

Does anybody else have any recommendations or suggestions for his hide area? Does anybody know what a habba hut is; any experience with them??

Anyways, take care, I'll try to go find out what this thing is...talk to you later,
