HEY IMAN - RE: Homemade Racks.....

christopher_o May 22, 2004 11:49 PM

I finished this one today...it's not that preety, but it's functional. So far temps are holdong great for BRB's. Each self is 20x48. The sides are 38". Each sterilite container is 45x18 floor space and about 7" tall.

Take care, Chris

I've thought (only thought) about building some sort of rack from wood. How do you make it humidity proof? Do you have to put a thousand layers of polyurethane on it or what?

By the way, I like the upside down moss hides. Great idea to help the humidity everywhere.

herping in Texas

Seriously though, I actually don't seal my racks...Which might sound strange...but I don't think the fumes ever really go away...and since snakes have such sensitive oraphory (sp) systems I don't want to chance it. Besides, I've never really had a problem with humidity damaging my sweater box racks...

I started using the rubbermaid boxes for hide/humidity boxes a long time ago. I got the idea to use them from using the same concept for gravid corn snakes...they will always use it as a nest box. I figured it was everything a BRB like...and they spend all their daytime hours in them. I use shallow 4" deli cups with a hole in the lid for babies...

How is that female coming along?...I'll bet your just on the edge of your seat!

I have never actually been herping (although I would like to). I think I can steer you in the right direction. All I ever come across are hognose and bulls. When I was in Japan on a visit we would often have to vacate the waters because beady-eyed snake heads were approaching. I wish I had been a little older and more interested when I was twelve. The only thing I tried to accomplish then was to throw back the clams and little crabs that were headed for the boiling pot!

there's nothing wrong with a hognose...but I would like to find Trans-pecos Rat snakes...my favorite Rat. You were in Japan? I'm so jealous...I took Japanese in college for 2 years...I always wanted to visit. I've had a facination with Asian history/Art/and culture in general.

Pretty Awesome.

How much did it cost to put together? What is the heating arrangement?

It looks great!

Thanks for sharing!

Typo- the shelves are 48x24. This design runs about $20 for every enclosure you put in it...including the sterilite tub...but not including heat. I'm using flex-watt on the back of one side of each shelf...add another $10 per shelf and the unit is up to about $150 or so. That might seem expensive but it houses 5 animals. Anyways, I remember a couple of weeks ago you were asking around about rack designs so I thought I'd share how I spent my afternoon...

All the best, Chris

I would love to know more about it. That is exactly what I am planning to do.

I will of course paint the rack and at the same time I will try to find more transparent tubs, but for the most part that is great for me!

Nice work...
