Swollen Eggs

angelawina May 23, 2004 12:36 AM

My leo laid her first eggs on April 27th. Over the past week or so, they seem to have swollen. They are very much larger than the clutch she laid today, so I am kinda worried. Is it normal for them to swell? Also, when you candle the eggs, are you supposed to see veins and stuff, or will it just be pink inside? Any and all replies very much appreciated!

Sounds normal to me, you should be able to see veins after the first week. Swelling is a good sign that your eggs have the potential to hatch. When candling fertile eggs, they will appear light pink at first then red to darker red or even black (depending upon the morph). A yellowish or orange color most likely means they are unfertile. But to play things safe, don’t through out any eggs until they have completely molded or collapsed.

Here is a shot of a nice little girl that hatched out tonight, I can already tell she has inquisitive personality:

Have had eggs swell suddenly and die in the past because of too much moisture in the incubating medium. When I vented the egg chambers and let the medium dry out some it fixed the problem. Yes, eggs normally do expand some but not in a few days time.
