Comparison-Burms/Retics

savvgawd May 23, 2004 12:38 AM

I'm in the process of ordering a few new 72" vision cages to add to the collection. I've never delt with retics before but have always wanted to. The closest I have are my 2 burms one being about 6' the other about 10'. Are there any big differences between the two? My burms are a joy to work with so I'm sure having a retic would be just as great but want to get prepared before anything. Thanks

They are both big snakes that can be a joy to work with, and also a handfull. I have years of experience with both and would say the main difference is the activity level of the retic. All snakes are different in there own way, and you have to observe them closely and get to know them as individuals. Retics just seem to be more curiouse about there surroundings and tend to be a little bit more of a challenge to handle, especially when they reach larger size. They are very powerful animals and should be shown the utmost respect when being kept. Just remember, no matter how trustworthy they may seem, never let your guard down. One small mistake can get you hurt, and one big mistake can be much worse! If you enjoy burms, then you will definitly love retics. Respect, caution, and intelligence is the key to being a responsible big snake keeper. Good luck, and enjoy!

I agree with mrclean, retics are a great step up from Burms! I recently got a yearling who is one of the sweetest, prettiest, and most curious snakes I've ever seen. They are a handful more than Burms, but so worth the extra effort! Go for it!

Let me know how those Vision cages work out! I've been thinking of ordering one or two myself. (ivorylabyrinth@aol.com)

I acually went ahead and took the advice of somone on the forums and ordered from Animals Plastics. The cages were cheaper, better looking, and the shipping was about 300 bucks less. I ordered 4 72" cages. The only big difference between vision and animals plastics is the time its going to take to get here. If i paid almost 500 more for vision, I could have them in 10 days. Animal plastics will take about 5 weeks but Im syked either way.

I whole-heartedly recommend that you look into buying an Animal Plastics cage. It's some of the best money I've ever spent. And...some of the best herpers in the business swear by them. Search the www.bobclark.com/bcforums for more info.

I have 0.1 burms and 1.1 retics. The burm is absolutely insane. She goes absolutely nuts if she thinks food is in the area. She pushes violently against the front of the cash and will strike at any movement. The retics are very intense but seem to be more restrained. This goes against what I've seen many people say and may just be my burm in particular.
