Baby Bearded Dragon impaction

kapeed May 23, 2004 01:04 AM

I too have a baby bearded dragon that suffered impaction due to crushed walnut shell litter. The store sold it to me with no warning that it is harmful to baby bearded dragons (or adult ones for that matter!). What I am wondering is, if everyone knows about the dangers of crushed walnut shells and the harm it causes the animals, why has no one done anything about attacking the companies that sell it? The brand I bought particularly stated, "For use with Bearded dragons...." What is that? Total false advertising. It is wrong and there should be some recourse. Isn't there some herpetological society or something that can be contacted to try and discontinue the marketing of this substrate? Every single site I have gone to states how bad it is. Then why is it in existence, AND being specifically marketed for bearded dragons? They might as well just bad broken glass and market it as lizard litter.

I asked the same question about calcium sand and hot rocks. It's all about marketing and chasing a buck. Yea someone should be responsable enough but...

it would be funny how many products were sold in the bird market, that killed too many birds so the companies pulled them off the market and then reparkaged them as reptile litter, crushed walnet shells is a prime example of that.

Calci-sand is another one that not only will impact them fast, but its marketed as being GOOD for them and can give them the calcium they need!

As the reptile trade growns, more products hit the shelf as wonder things for reptiles, don't buy the marketings statements or comments from those with a personal agenda to promote them.

That stuff is so awful. When i worked in a pet store and i saw poeple with that i woudl stop them and tell them that it WOULD KILL THEIR ANIMAL. so many horror stories with that stuff. I think the only use for it is for arachnids.
