Help!!! I just found worms in his stool!!

gothra May 23, 2004 08:52 AM

I've had him for about 7 months now (think he's almost 1 year old), he lost about 13 grams from Dec '03 to Jan '04, but regaining his weight slowly this month; he is now 59 grams. Today, when I came home, I discovered he had runny stool that has a reddish tint to it, when I light it with a torch to inspect it, I saw about 3 white-colored worms in it, one of it was even moving around. He is sleeping alot today, and when I look at his underside, I saw a large area of black in his stomach that I don't recall present a week ago.

I'll be taking him to the vet tomorrow night, but just want to know if anyone knows what this could be?? From the "Dr. gecko" webpage, it seems that he might have hookworms, anyone has experience on this?
Please help!!!! Thanx.

It could be hook worms or pin worms. The vet should give you panacur. What are you feeding him this is what could of caused the worms. Geckos do tend loose weight when they have worms.
No mater what it is make sure you bleach his cage and try to get all of his poop out of the cage as soon as he goes to the bathroom.
From the time a pinworm egg is swallowed until it becomes a full-grown worm is about 4 weeks. Pinworm eggs can live outside the intestinal tract for up to three weeks. The itching is caused by when an adult female worm surfaces to lay more eggs. In severe cases of pinworms, the adult worms can be seen in fecal matter. An adult pinworm is white, and about one-half inch long.

About the food source, I have 8 geckos, all of them eat mealworms that I breed myself; about 2-3 weeks ago, I thought it would be nice to give them crickets for a change, so I bought some crickets from a pet store. If the crickets are the source of contamination, then my other 7 geckos probably have worms as well...can I give them panacur also?

Can mealworms carry the pin/hook worm eggs also? Shall I throw away my colony? Thanks.
