Are there any Chameleons that could be used for educational shows?

MikeT May 23, 2004 08:56 AM

HI,
I do animal and educational shows and I was interested in adding a chameleon. Are there any species that could handle this sort of stress of being moved and handled for this type of situation or would you advise against using a chameleon? I would definately a prefer a large species.
Thanks for any input,
Mike

Mike,

What kind of shows are you talking about?

I pack a bunch of animals and reptiles in containers and bring them to birthday parties or school classrooms and show each animal individually. Some animals the kids can either touch or hold. I'm wondering if there's any type of chameleon that will be okay with some periodic travelling and being shown (held by me).
thanks

NO! Do not use a chameleon! That is going to FREAK the cham out. Any chameleon that is exposed to a bunch of little kids will be supper stressed out especially since kids like to "touch/grab" anything that is interesting. If you tried this with a Veiled you would probably have some kids with bitten fingers anyway. I really think a cham is just a bad idea for show and tell. I do like the idea of showing kids animals though. Who knows maybe one of these kids will turn into a president that gives a flying fu@* about nature, I really hope so. Keep up the good work...But not with a chameleon.

Mike,

If you plan this right, I think you can pull this off.

The packing, traveling and showing is going to be hard on a cham. If it isn't exposed to this stress too often, it won't be too horrible on 'em. As long as you put your chams health first, I see nothing wrong with it.

If it were me, I would get a few chams and put them in a rotation. I would avoid taking the same cham out more than a few times a year.

Twice a year, I pack up a few chams and become part of my wife's kindergarten lesson. So, I know what kind of response you get from kids. They become every bit as fascinated with chams as we are..

Julie at Basking Wonders. They do presentations with their chams. Go to the site to read about them and see their link for Traveling Wonders.
