Ethical Dilema with BD

leofreak May 23, 2004 11:25 AM

My beardie has been sick for like 2 months and he cant move very well he jus wiggles around and he flips over alot and sometimes he stays like that for along time like if i'm at school. He cant eat by himself and when ever he poops and tries to move away from it he gets it all over himself. He is also on 2 medicines and was one 3 and I know he hates it and I hate to see himself frustrated and unable to move good.So my dilema(sp?) is should I put him to sleep or not. I dont think I can provide him with the 24/7 care he needs because I'm in middle school and have school for 6 hours of the day. What would you do in my situation?

Im my opinion, sometimes the most responsible thing we can do as a loving owner is to realize when a favorite pet has had enough pain and suffering and allow them the rest they deserve; Euthanizia is sometime the best option; If he was mine I think I would choose that at this time.

I Agree, the bd is suffering and it sounds like there is little hope for him to get better....

Sounds like medically you and your vet have tried everything. Do you know exactly why he is sick and won't get better?

When considering euthanasia what you need to look at is quality of life. When my dog had cancer there was a long time where she got along her daily life as normal, and was happy. I knew it was time to consider euthanasia when she started to have difficulty doing what was normal for her. Climbing onto the couch was a chore and forget jumping on the bed! She had tumors in her throat and eventually began to strain just to breath properly. It was right then, had I waited much longer she may have suffocated.

The reason I tell that story is to give an example of measuring quality of life. There is a time between when your pet goes from being well to suffering. If you've done everything you can and it just gets worse, I think the best time to euthanize is during that time after it can no longer live normally day to day, and before it is in pain. Ultimately it is up to you to decide when that is, and it's a very hard choice to make, but by far the kindest.

We have done everything we can and still done know why. He cant really live life normally because like I said he has a hard time thermoregulating and such.
