Whitewater and Snowcreek report

USNHM242 May 23, 2004 12:34 PM

Chilli last night(saturday), but in the early evening until 10pm the herps where out. Here is a quick report.
Whitewater:
3 gopher snakes
1 red diamond rattler
2 Shovelnoses

Snow creek:
1 california kingsnake(this guy was by far the largest kingsnake I have ever seen. We measured him just shy of 6 feet. Unfortunately, some asshole in a sedan ran him over and killed him just before we could capture him.)
1 Speckled rattler
2 geckoes.

Overall an okay night. Hopefully things will pick up when the temps become higher.

Are you absolutely sure that it was a spec on snow creek? I have seen sidewinders out there but never a spec.

Yup, I collected it. I will post his pics when I get home tonight or tomorrow morning.

Sounds like you had a nice night at Whitewater and Snow Creek. There should be more herps out when it warms back up. I got an email from someone this morning that he and a friend went cruising White water and north of Verbvenia last Thursday night. He said it was cooler than the previous Saturday when I went out. Unfortunately, they didn't see any reptiles. It looks like you can see reptiles when it's cool there. I don't think they drove up the canyon road far enough as they turned around about 2 1/2 mile up the road when they saw a Prvate Property sign. The cars out the night I was there go up about 7 miles. I was turning around at the Trout Fishing Farm. Did you happen to take any pics of the geckos?
