New Hatchlings

jgika May 23, 2004 01:02 PM

Hey all...One of my geckos eggs just hatched(Lavender/Jungle). its been a while since I have had new hatchlings so i have a question or 2. How long are you supposed to leave the hatchling with the egg? Are you supposed to keep it there for a day or so because its feeds off the nutrients in the egg? Am i off base here? I know I heard this some where...

Secondly...I am out of space so unfortunately these little guys or I should say gals are going to have to be brought to the local pet store. What does one charge a pet store for new leos? i am not trying to make any money here but I need some idea of what is reasonable so the pet store does not rip me off and so I do not go in there thinking I should get more than the going rates. I am assuming people dont just give their new leos away for free.

I look forward to hearing from you..thanks...

I've never dealt with hatchlings hands on, but from what i understand you leave them in there for 24-hours. that may not be correct but i posted it incase you don't get another response anytime soon. I'm not positive on this, but I would ask the pet store for anywhere from $15-$20, depending on if you are factoring in that they are a "jungle" pattern. Good luck!

I leave my new hatchlings in the incubation box for a day or 1 1/2 days. They are very easily stressed! So handle with care. As far as how much you can get, that depends on the pet store. Many chain stores have a policy against buying from anyone other than their wholesale contacts. Mom & pop pet shops have much more freedom to purchase, but they are likely to give you a fraction of what the gecko is worth. Make sure the pet store has experience with leos so they won't house them with something like a monitor or something!

Yeah, my girlfriend's parents own a pet supply store that doesn't currenly have any reptiles, only fish. They said that if I breed my leos (which would be next spring), that they would be happy to buy the babies from me to start a new store project.
I'm not saying I'm trying to do this for profit of course (that would be ridiculous, using my leos and having them bear eggs for a few weeks then laying them and using all the supplies and then the time and money of incubating the egg for 50 days and all of that and hopefully hatching and raising a baby for like $10), because i'm only planning on breeding enough for like 2-4 eggs. I'm just saying that there are small shops out there that would want them.
On the other hand, I know that big-time petshops probably don't want them. because at petsmart the lady was like "yeah our leopard gecko keeps laying eggs and we have to keep throwing them out". I guess maybe they could take babies though, just not eggs.

Its a good thing you have an outlet to purchase your geckos. One problem, geckos usually lay more than 2 -4 eggs from a mating. They retain sperm & can lay many eggs. I have some that have been dropping eggs like crazy. Just plan to have some available space for all those little surprises! And hey, if you get overwhelmed you can send a few extras to me...I can build cages or racks almost as fast as they hatch!

Well my male and females are all about 4 months old, and I'm getting a new cage to separate them in about a week, so they'll be living separately, and if i do decide to try and mate them, I'll just house them together during the mating season next year when they're old enough. I was planning on only having a few though, how many can they have off on retained sperm and eggs? This is why it would be good to have the "in-law"'s pet store to give them to, because i doubt i can take care of too many suprise babies. I would only want to raise 1 or maybe 2 to keep, the rest I would sell or give away. But yeah, I'm really glad they are there to take the babies if i need it. Also, it would be a good thing for them to start housing/selling reptiles in their store.

Thanks guys/gals...

I appreciate your input. I do happen to have a mom and pop type store that already told me they would take my leos if I breed them. This place is pretty cool and takes real good care of their reptiles. They have a lot o exotics I have never seen before so i think my newbies will be all good.

My little one is doing well...I guess I should take pics and post them right?
