Gony heartbreak...

Conrad May 23, 2004 03:32 PM

Well, I know have a for sure proven pair of Gonyosoma oxcephala, my female laid 5 eggs...however, this story has a horrible twist. She laid 4 of them before her prelay shed was complete UNDER the laying box, which I found when checking up on her while she was beginning to complete her shed, and the last one out in the middle of timbuckto during that night. The eggs look to have been fertile, though all are pretty well beat up. I've got them in the incubator "just in case"...maybe I'm just chasing a dream. But I know better for next year...but YEAH for near G. oxcephala success!

By the way, for those who don't know. My pair consists of a green LTC female, and a silver LTC male. I'd have some pictures of the pair, but they hate cameras and I can get close without them striking at it!

Still keeping my fingers crossed....

They are a beautiful species and we need more people trying to do captive breeding programs with them.

Hi Conrad,

I have experienced this many times with Gonyosoma. I had a female (recently died at nearly 17 years)that produced three to four clutches a year, always depositing the eggs before or during the pre egg laying slough.

I did get two good clutches about six years ago, not certain what the difference was but I believe access to nesting well before deposition is crucial.

Hope that helps.

Regards Mark
