Success with new rescues

Have to share a happy:

Received two 11 month olds, one M, one F, presumed clutch mates, several weeks ago. Original owner could not keep up with their care.

The background is that these dragons had never, not even once, eaten independently. If you opened their mouths and inserted food they would chew and swallow but did not recognize or seek food. They were subsisting on force fed moistened pellets and dusted wax worms. They had been through a course of Albon and Hill's A/d supplementation with no improvement in their appetite.

These guys are tiny. I mean, like dragons in miniature. Would be kind of cute if it weren't so scary. When we got them they were about half the size of our next youngest, who is 9 m.o.
Otherwise they are normal-seeming dragons. They drink eagerly, bask and clamber around like any juvie. They just showed no interest in any food offered. Well, the good news is that three weeks into a course of daily outdoor basking, 2x daily parazap and 2x daily acidophiliz , with continued babyfood/vitamin supplementation while food was ignored, we have achieved daily normal BM's (one from each of which has gone for testing) and today (drum roll please) BOTH TRACKED AND GOBBLED SMALL-SIZE SUPERWORMS--2 for one and 3 for the other. I called their original owner and she almost cried.

Just had to share . Thanks for listening!

Wishing all well,

michele

thanks for taking in other peoples problems.
thanks for caring about those animals that others no longer care for.
thanks for trying when others have given up.

As someone who is also devoted to rescue animals, I know what a wonderful feeling it can be when things go so right. Do you place your rescues as well or keep them all?

So far we have kept all our rescues. The most severe-needs animals we have had so far have been a badly burned ball python and our first beardie, a multiple amputee. It is very hard not to get attached to something you have to give shots to 3x a day and that comes to you in such pain and need. (Note for anyone needing the info--nonlubricated condoms are the way to go when you need to keep medicated dressings on a snake.) So far, we've only lost one rescue, another burned python. I personally can't see giving up any of our animals...well, okay, maybe one, but he is so evilly-tempered that takers will be hard to come by. So I forsee Scar (earned that name, sadly) living out his days with us, skulking in his hide and striking and hissing like a maddened cat whenever he catches sight of us. Ah well, at least he'll be warm, healthy and well-fed. I do have a moratorium on Iguanas and giant snakes. Simply don't have the facilities to adequately house or care for them (Of course, neither do many people, which is why so many end up discarded...sigh) I don't see giving up rescues when there is such a need, however, so I can imagine that at some point we will run out of permanent housing room and will begin to have to find homes.

Do you find homes for your rescues? How do you go about it?

Best,
michele

fortunately we have always found the extra room to keep most of them. I don't advertise the ones we are willing to part with. if someone shows up and is interested and I believe they are able to meet the animlas needs then we adopt them out. Only once did I dump an animal on a friend of mine...

We took in a 3' ig with MBD and after a month of caring for it and vet bills it charged accross a 4' cage, bit me and nearly took my finger off. After that, it has been no more green igs. We have several K9s including a couple wolf hybrids, torts, and some BDs that people were not willing to take care of.

I have a ton of rescues too! This is indie, my BD rescue. She was kept with about 2 doz different sized beardeds in a tank the size of a 10gal at petco. I saved her when she was a hatchling. She is the best! My ig is a rescue too. SOmetimes, the rescued ones are the best pets!
