Pregnancy signs?

ed17 May 23, 2004 05:48 PM

Hi,
Last weekend 2 of my three toeds mated. I have noticed that my female is now soaking for hours at a time. i was just wondering is this normal? What are typical signs of pregnancy? Any info and advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Ed

soaking and nothing else would probly be egg bound.. or she's dehydrated, pacing, test holes and soaking are signs of being gravid

I've noticed that the majority of the time i have to take her out of the water bowl so she'll eat, but when i had her in the outside enclousure when it was warmer this week she did dig a shallow hole, about 3 or 4 inches deep. Is this normal? How could i be sure if shes eggbound? When she does get out of the water bowl she is quite active and is eating very well.
Thanks,
Ed

a test hole would be as deep as a nesting hole, unless the soil's not suitable, or she doesn't like it.. nesting females tend to be a bit picky.

A sure way to tell is to place your finger right in front of the turtle's hind leg, feel around for a little bump. You will be able to feel the tip of the eggs. But, box turtles are tricky because they can, and will, close their shell on your finger! So be careful.

like JOSTA said be careful, palpating can be painful(for you.. or if done wrong you could injure the turtle or break an egg)
holding a back leg firmly, and pressing your index finger against the inner skin where the skin meet shell right above the leg, if you lose the leg dont worry to much if your fingers in the right spot her leg can't withdraw and she will be unable to close up.
