Housing a collared lizard with my Leo???

Tazz10 May 23, 2004 08:25 PM

I read in the Leopard Gecko Manual that one can house a collared lizard with a leopard gecko. Has any of you tried it? Does it always work out fine?
I have an adult male leo in a 20 gallon tank and thought it would be nice to have a diurnal lizard with my nocturnal guy, but I don't want to make their life miserable if they are going to annoy each other.
What is the minimal size I should choose to make sure the new lizard isn't mistaken for dinner?

I've never read that you can do this, and while i've never heard anything against it, I would assume you shouldn't and would definately advise against it. I coudl be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you should stay within the species.

Sounds like you can perhaps do this... I'm going to read up on it when I get a chance. if so, my mistake.

I have not done it myself yet...I will eventually...if these babies ever stop hatching out...lol. I want to do the leo/collared set up, and a mixed species tank with Rhacodactylus. I personally would not stick with the 20 gallon. I would go for 40 gallon or greater. You need to set up hides for each species. It may take alot of observation on your part in order to "tweek" the tank in a way that both species are comfortable.
good luck

With collared'd being lizard eaters, it definately isn't something that "would always be ok".
I eventually want to try this kind of a tank, though. A 40G (at least) and thorough observation...it'd be very interesting.

Good luck!

Generally mixing species is considered very bad. One species could be harboring bacteria and "gut fauna" that are beneficial to it but potentially hamrful to another species. Collared Lizards are a US species...therefore from a totally different habitat than Leopard Geckos. While care requirements may be similar....Collared's require slightly higher temperatures and can potentially kill and eat your leos since they naturally prey on smaller lizards. They also require more room than a leopard gecko does so putting them into a 20 gallon long tank...isn't a viable option. Collared's are very active...very personable little things but I wouldn't mix species. It isn't the smart thing to do.

Collards are EXTREMELY cannabalistic. Housing one with your leo would be its death sentance. It is even difficult to house collards together sometimes. Leos are quite squishy, with little deffence, so i would advise not doing so.

I do have a collared and a gecko and here is a few reason why i wont house them togheter. My collared is very active (run and jump most of the day), he need higher temp (105 to 85), he is quite aggressive (most collared are for other lizard). I really believe that if i put them in the same enclosure, they will have a big fight and if not my gecko will stress out because of the level of activity of the collared.

Thats my 2 cents

Thank you all for your input. I don't want my little guy (or any other lizard) to be at risk and I can't watch them 24/7 so I will leave him alone for now and will think about buying another tank for another lizard... and maybe one day another leo or two to start some breeding.
People who say that herps are addictive are right... I don't know what it is with them but they are definitely addictive. Their constant smile maybe?
