Heating ?'s

Does anyone know why/which part of those clamp on lighting fixtures is only rated for 100/150 watts? My enclosure I've just built for my Uro is 78"Lx26"Wx34"H. I don't need to heat all of the space but I do need a basking spot that I have a feeling only a 250 watt infra red bulb will produce. I really don't want to ballast a fixture b/c of the way I designed the top. Any help/advice/comments are greatly appreciated.

Only the socket of the fixture has the rating a fixed to it. Go to your local Hardware store and find one that has a higher rating. I would use a lesser rated bulb the wattage doesn't say how hot its going to be a 150 watt bulb will put off a litle less heat than a 250 but will also use less electricity. The 150 bulb will still produce a 105' hot spot. Use a radient panel for overall cage heat.

Thanx for the advice, the only thing with that is I need an ambient temp of 100f and a basking spot of 125-135f. I found a fixture at walmart that says it's rated for 660 watts but looks super cheap (has cardboard inside it) and doesn't say anything about being safe with heat lamps.
