first clutch

dmac77 May 23, 2004 09:46 PM

Woke up Friday morning and my snow corn female had dropped a clutch of 23 nice size eggs in about four seperate groups. Every single egg was healthy and fat, no duds at all. Got them in a rubbermaid with moist sphagum moss right now while tweeking my home made incubator. Also, wanted some thoughts on the incubator I'm using....

Took a medium (not sure the size) styrofoam cooler and put a container similar to my egg box in it with damp sphagum moss. The plastic container has a heat pad on it that is connected to a thermostat (not a fancy one, just an unlabeled dial type). I cut a small hole in the bottom for the cord to come out and stuffed wool yarn around the cord to take up the extra space and taped both ends. Right now I'm trying to get the thermostat set to where the interior of the egg container stays 85-88 degrees and moist.

How does that sound? any comments or suggestions? If I can get hold of a digi cam soon i'll post some pics... just thought I'd share what I did.

Dave

No first hand experience here, but I've heard you should try to keep the temp around 82 (with 85 being the high) so you may want to lower the temp a bit.

I agree, although I'd say you are doing a good job so far! Keep us posted!

What happened to just going out and buying a hubivator? I use these and work well for me. No guess work just set the temp and go, temps stay constant and is easy to use. I usually have my corn eggs at 84 degrees.

I looked at the hobivator, but already had most of the parts for this incubator lying around. Seemed less expensive to just improvise.

Thanks for the feedback, guys, and glad I hadn't put my eggs in yet. I'm working on getting the dial to where it keeps the container at 83 now. Still needs a bit of fine tuning, but it's getting close. Eggs are still doing great. Plump, firm, and no funky colored molds.
