Let me start by saying I live in Southern Louisiana and grew up in New Orleans. My cousin, Rob Melancon ( who currently breeds dart frogs ), indirectly sparked my interest in the hobby. He had a boa constrictor that was tame as a dog and I was mesmorized by this mysterious animal. This was at least 15 years ago, and I am still fascinated with herpetology to this day.
I understand your fear of revealing the truth about being a snake owner, especially in the work place. Truth is I have found it my duty to to take a stand and educate people to the best of my abilities regarding these magnificant animals. If more herpers take a stand you may find there are more people who will learn to "tolerate" reptiles from hearing words out of YOUR mouth. Also, some of these people may just find a new passion. I have occassionally witnessed a change in others attitudes in minutes of speeking with them. These will be the people you least likely thought as well. When I has in school I had given several speeches of how reptiles (snakes mainly ) are simply misunderstood. By the end of the classes a large percent of the students kept me after with question after question. You can go through life worried of how others perceive you, but freedom comes from expression.
I hope you are able to find others that share your interests. To answer your question, my wife shares the hobby with me. Unfortunately, she is not as excited about it as she used to be since she got a parrot, lol.

P.S: Thanks again kingsnake.com! By reading this thread I learned that Pro Exotics is less than an hour drive from my house. Cool!
