Did my veiled stop drinking or is he just not thirsty???

veiledcham May 23, 2004 10:07 PM

I have a 4 month old veiled and the last time I saw him drink was Sunday and that's a week ago. Is he just not thirsty? His eyes are a big sunken I spray him and his cage 3 times a day for about 2 minutes and he doesn't drink the water off the leaves.

sorry typo "his eyes are a bit sunken." I think how are his eyes supposed to look?

When my veiled poops there's no white anymore just brown.

No, this is not good. The sunken eyes and no white in the urates are both signs of dehydration. Please give us more info:

cage size, type and location and general setup (plants, branches)
lighting used (UVB, brand, wattage, etc.)
temp in basking temp elsewhere
humidity level
food: gutloaded? supplements? how much how often?
water source - do you have a dripper as well as the misting? just the spraying wiil not suffice. Some animals take a few minutes before they are stimulated to drink. You may have to coax him with a syringe (no needle). I sometimes drip water directly down Luna's snout so that it drips to her mouth. It may take several times but she will usually begin to drink.
how was he when you first got him?
how long have you had him?

So give us the info (and anything else you can think of) and we'll see if there is anything wrong with your setup (photo, too if you have one).

he has a 24x24x36 screen cage 4 feet above the ground with a ficus and lots of branches. I have a 100 powersun 8 inches away fromm his basking spot and a reptisun. his basking temperature is 93 degrees and 75-80 degrees outside of the basking spot. The humidity level is 60. I gutload his crickets with leafy greens and carrots. I supplement him with miner-all 2 times a week and repcal multivitamin once a week. I don't have a dripper. I got him when he was a month old and I've had him for 3 months.

He might be licking the leaves when u are not looking. Does he eat leaves from your tree? If he does, he is quite possibly getting moisture from the plants or even his feeder insects. But that may not be enough.

One thing u could do is get a plastic/paper party cup and poke a pinhole in the bottom.Do not make a big hole, otherwise the water will drip too fast. Fill it up with water and put it on top of your cage. Small droplets of water will drip from the pinhole and onto the leaves of your plants. Give your chameleon some privacy and maybe he/she will lick the water from the leaves.

That would serve as your dripper if you have difficulty affording other watering methods. you can fill up the cup a couple of times a day.

your setup sounds OK. Nicademus may be on to something with the parasite. I know very little about them and you would probably need a vet to determine.

Are you using a dripper? Can you post a photo of the cham?

I had a chameleon several years ago who did this. Turns out it was not dehydration, it was a parasite. Perhaps you should get him checked by a vet.
