Sad box turtle story....

carl3 May 23, 2004 11:09 PM

Well, not too soon after I posted my thread below (with pics) about saving a box turtle on a road in the pine barrens area (and releasing it back to the wild)....my friend found another box turtle with a much worse fate.

He called me up and said he found a box turtle near his home squished dead on the road. BUT...he did a great thing...He saved TWO eggs that shot out of the poor thing. They looked viable and he immediately checked the internet for how to setup a natural incubation with sph.moss. IF they are good and hatch successfully, he promised to release them back into the wild for future generations to come.

I realize I do not post alot on this forum BUT 2 box turtle stories in one week is just too interesting not to share. The greatest feeling about this is I'm the one that turned my friend onto herps and while he is a complete novice, he did the right thing without having much background knowledge. If not for his effort, these eggs would surely have dried up and been lost. How long does incubation take if done naturally in accordance with natural, yet minimal temp fluctuations?

Sincerely,
Jason

This is just too typical....shortly after this, we decided to look for and photograph wild herps and no luck whatsoever. I find them when I'm not looking but cannot ever find them when I am looking for them.

your friend should have cut the turtles shell open, 2 eggs is a rather small clutch for any turtle, good luck incubating though

The turtle and its shell were smashed to bits...there were more eggs (along with its insides splattered) BUT they were crushed....only two were actually viable-looking.
