A lil help with a baby crested...

anemone May 23, 2004 11:21 PM

I just bought a baby crested gecko yesterday at a show. He looks perfectly healthy, but only maybe a few days old. She said he's eatting babyfood, but so far he hasn't went to it. I have been kind of forcefeeding him though. I sick some on his nose or chin and he licks it right off. Is this fine? And how should I be feeding him? I gave him a pinhead last night and he jumped after it several times, but just never caught it.

If your Baby was chasing crikets , Then don't be too concerned, his desire to eat means he will eat.
Baby food is a much ''Heavier''meal than crickets and its often hard to tell if they have touched it or not.Just keep a eye on him in case he starts getting smaller. Then worry.

This is very common. Take a look at your crested and try to imagine how small his stomach actually is. This, combined with the fact that babies usually don't eat until it's completely dark will explain why you're not seeing it eat.

I would also recommend using Crested Gecko Diet or Gargoyle Gecko diet instead of or mixed with the baby food.

Also, be sure to take a look at my Crested Gecko FAQ section (link below).

Thanks a lot. I have read your site when I was researching, but I never read that part. He it's skinny and not fat, he's probably normal, but he looks maybe 5 days old. I was dabbing baby food on his nose again tonight and his eyes get all big and he stands straight up licking it excitly, like he enjoys it. But sometimes he jumps away when he doesn't want it. Am I stressing him out feeding him this way or is this fine? Also what size cage should I be keeping him in? Since he's so tiny I have him in a 5gal critter keeper, but I read somewhere a 1gal is better.

I think hand feeding is unnecessary, but I'm not sure that it really does cause stress.

A 5 gallon is fine. I keep babies in the small one (half gallon or so), but that's just because I have to conserve space.

He actually licked some off my finger tonight. He ate a lot more than usall. I think he's getting used to his enviroment. He's jumping around a lot also.
I have a 10gal already for when he gets bigger. And I'm be purchasing a 22gal when he gets adult size.
thanks for your help =)
