Vet question & tortoise selection

Mandoziz May 23, 2004 11:59 PM

One more question.....I am still deciding on what tortoise to purchase. I live in Kansas and the humidity can be very high. I was interested in a leopard tortoise but after hearing that they can't stand high humidity I crossed them off the list. Would a Sulcata be a good beginners tortoise? I would like a personable tortoise that can stand high humidity. Size is not an issue.

Also, how do I go about finding a vet in my area that is good with tortoises? I have a feeling if I went to my regular dog vet he would say he is good with reptiles even if he isn't.
Any advise?
Thank you
Mandy

I live in Kansas to, I have Redfoots, Yellowfoots and Russians. I have them outdoors now and they are alot of fun to watch. I have taken them to a vet in Manhatten but I'm going to get ahold of KSU vet clinic there. They have a couple vets that do reptiles. Make sure you give them a big pen to stay in.

Redfoot or yellowfoot is probably a better choice than a sulcata if where you live is humid. I don't own any yellowfoots so I am not sure how personable they are but my redfoots love to be around people.
