That for the most part only occurs in Phoenix South Mountain Park(Salt River Mtns) that the males are solid black with a orange to red orange tales. The color locality is protected in AZ but I am still unsure if it is because it is in the park or not. DVL hydridized this color phase with the common NV western chuckwalla so now we have mutts. Actually they are both the same species just different localities. I heard that Matthew Kwiatkowski (pers. comm.) did the DNA work on the locale and there is actually enough difference to call it a seperate species but AZGF wants to just leave well enough alone as not to draw too mech attention to them and have everybody and there brothers out there poaching them. The ones that DVL, Lindsay Pike and Richard Montanucci have are preprotection animals. I am sure there are more out there since they have been breeding and dispersing the offspring. Jerry Feldner of AZ told me that just the redtails within the park boundaries are protected and any of them outside can be legally collected within the limit of the AZ law.

I thought i commented on them but now I looked I guess I didn't. I guess I am getting old and senile. HEHE. Anyway he and Chewalla look great. How long is Chewy anyway? He looks like a monster. Anyway I can tell you the largest common chuck I have ever seen was 14 inches. Grebster was about ten when I sent him so Chewy deffinately looks at least 14. Tom

Ya know I have noticed Chewy looking BIG lately, but thought it was because Grebster was smaller. LOL

I just measured them both, Chewy was a whooping 15 3/4 PLUS just a tad shy of 16 inches ! So thats a good size boy hunh?

Grebster is now 12 inches , so since you sent him hes grown a couple inches!

I'll have to ask Paul M. where he got Chewy !!! I have had him since he was about 12 weeks, so I have seen him turn into a big Chuck !

The boys again , Chewy and Grebster
