ceramic heater OK on mesh tank top?

keithd May 24, 2004 08:13 AM

Hi,
I'd like to set up a tank for a young redfoot; I want to use a ceramic heater bulb in a light fixture. The clamp lights I've seen are a bit flimsy; I'd hate to have the fixture fall into the tank. I already have a substantial fixture that would hold the ceramic bulb, but there is no clamp. Can I just rest this on the wire mesh top for the tank? Or would the mesh not hold up to the heat?
Any opinions / advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Keith

Ceramic heat bulbs/emitters create an enormous amount of radiant heat. Trust me, I've burned myself on them too many times and it feels like you're being branded. You're going to heat that wire mesh like a barbeque grate in no time. Spend the money and get one of the ceramic end light fixtures and cage designed for heat emitters. Your tort and your own hide will appreciate it.
