In 33 years of tort keeping in a word...never. If you've had torts long enough you realize just how quick and pathologically escape minded these chelonians really are.

No, I mean in an outdoor enclosure. Not just running free in the backyard.
As quickly as I could assemble a SECURE enclosure. I have always purchased my torts between June and September (24 of my 33 years with torts was in Massachusetts so any other time of the year was playing with fire)so typically they were outside within a week.
The key is a secure enclosure. By that I mean one that keeps them in and predators (human and furry ones) out. All of my pens (we live in greater Minneapolis now) have solid chicken wire frame tops and key locks. We have a fenced in back yard so people aren't much of a threat anymore, but raccoons remain one. And boy are they industrious.
