young Veiled chameleon rubbing eye

Nicademus May 24, 2004 09:06 AM

I just recently purchased a young veiled chameleon. He looks healthy (i've had several in the past), and is eating heartily. However, his eyes seem squinted, and I saw him this morning rubbing one of his eyes on a branch.

Are squinted eyes normal for a young veiled chameleon? Hes the smallest one i've ever owned (very tiny). Should I be concerned?

If he only did it once or twice I wouldn;t worry too much. They clean out their eyes this way sometimes.

Do you use a dripper that he can sit under? They will "clean" their own eye this way (bubble out, rub etc. once they are nice and wet). You can try using warm water to try and flush out anything that may be there.

He sits with his eyes closed a lot too. Moreso than my old ones. Perhaps I should rinse him in warm water? Although doing so would be very stressful?

my jax rubs his eyes, horns and mouth every time i wet him down but that's the only time...if your cham is sleeping during the day there is definetly a problem

hmmmm...that is not good. If you have a sterile eye dropper you could try flushing his eyes with warm water to see if he tries to clean them on his own. Try it several times. This might work better than bringing him to the water - bring the water to him. Is he still eating and drinking OK?
