Found in the road on Hwy 90 near Comstock. Going to keep him a couple weeks and see if he eats well. Luckily I have a red ant circle nearby to harvest. I know that Texas HL are protected, but Round Tailed are not, correct?

Head shot of my RTHL...

Hey there,
just met you in the Collared lizard forum. =)
Your Round-tail looks kind of blackish; moreso than typical specimens i have seen. What was the habitat like where you found him? I mean, besides the asphalt. heh. maybe the reptoman knows if they're protected, since he lives in Texas, I think. How does he eat? He's an awesome looking fellow! Nice pics. I'll talk with you soon.

Round tails are not protected in Texas. The Texas horned lizard and the short horned lizards are protected in texas.
Oh he changes color from darker to lighter, and his dark patches behind his head and near his tail fade and darken too. He ate 9 red harvester ants so far. Going to go back in the field behind my house and harvest some more harvester ants tomorrow, as well as work on his own tank...seperate from my lil T-Rex!
We were in Terlingua and Lajitas for the past two weeks. We caught a trio of the RT. One adult male from Study Butte and a pair of sub-adult near Lajitas. They need the ants but ours also eat small crickets and mealworms. We're going out of town but I'll post pics on Tuesday. Ours look different. (colorwise) They do change colors but our Lajitas pair look totally different than the other male from Sudy Butte. Their base color that they keep most of the time is very different. The pair was from a Boquillas limestone area and the lone male was from a range out of the limestone. The other two are very white. They're great, we love them. We also have three female desert HL.
Cute as a button ain't they? But from the field guide I have I thought they were kinda ugly. Better in person I guess. I want to get a female now, I can just imagine how cute the lil ones would be! And that sure is a wonderful corner of Texas huh? Too bad most of the rest of this once great state has been destroyed. Sure wish we had more protected land...
