Feeding Veggies

RoyC May 24, 2004 11:06 AM

My turtle won't eat any eat any veggies but romaine lettuce and peas. I'm pretty sure he will eat collard and mustard greens as they look just like romain lettuce. But he wont eat any carrots, grapes or cantelopes. Does anyone know how to remedy this? Thanks.

Carrots, grapes and cantalope aren't really recommended foods anyway. Nutritious greens and aquatic plants are really what your turtles need. You can't force them to eat anything that they don't want to.

I read somewhere that it was good to feed them berries and good for them to gnaw on cantelope rind. What about cuttle bone? My turtle doesn't eat that either. He doesn't even try to bite it. He just hangs off of it and floats around sometimes.

The greens are very good for your turtle and so is the cuttle bone. Just let it float in the tank and he may eventually take a bite out of it.

He's a hatchling still, I think...1.5 inches. He's not strong enough to even scratch the bone. I bought it from Petsmart so I don't think it has the hard shell on it. I don't know what it looks like with the shell.

The cuttle bone is a oval shape and the "backing" is the flat side that isn't chalky. It is difficult to remove, I pick it off in pieces using a knife to help pry it away. The cuttle bone is solid but not too hard, even a 1.5" turtle can bite pieces of it off if it wants to.

Most juvenile turtles start out mostly carnivorous and move to there vegetarian habits as they get older.

My RES is about 4" now and he will eat raw carrots sliced thin. Although my cooter likes veggies a lot more.
