Redfoot Substrate

Would Bead-a-beast be a good substrate for a redfoot?

Hi,
I use bed-a-beast with a 1/2 inch or more of spahgnum moss on top...This substrate mixture works extremely well to keep the humidity up, because the moss holds up to 20 times its weight in water..I keep the substrate slightly moist, not wet...I mist 2 or 3 times a day...With the spahnum moss on top "Sage" can burrow down with out to much of a mess...

Have a good DAY!!! shawne1

I use it as a mix with sand for our Russian's and Greek's, but wonder about ingestion possibilities and mold with Redfoot's. Our Redfoot environment uses a 5 inch layer of cypress mulch with 2 inches of damp sphagnum moss on top to ease digging and hiding. Our RF's are 3 year olds so they're still in "hide in the substrate" mode. Once they reach 6 inches or so the acting like a Russian/Sulcatta behaviour will stop.

The reason for our substrate choice is having a Big Apple Herp misting system that runs 9 times over 24 hour period to keep the humidity a constant 70-80%. Neither moss nor cypress mold, as both are inert, which as a huge plus in our situation.

As long as you feed your RF's on a piece of slate, then I don't think it would be a big issue.
