Nice suprise in a new area...

Matt Hampel May 24, 2004 03:35 PM

I recently moved to a new area in Deleware... I previously lived in PA, so this was totaly new for me...

Taking a look around my neighborhood, it didn't seem like there was anything what-so-ever to do... Upon wondering around, I found a pleasant suprise...

I couldn't wait to take a look around... I sit at the pond's edge, and I get a visitor...

I know the picture quality is crappy, but I circled in white a baby Snapper taking a look at me...

Also, plenty of Musk turtles (AKA Stinkpots):

I know, also a crappy picture, but again, circled in white...

I've also seen a turtle that was quite larger than any Snappers or Musk turtles I've seen... I had the appearance of a Painted Turtle, but was much much too large to be one... Maybe with the proper net, I can take a closer look and see what these big buggers are (catch and release only of course )

About 1,000 ft. out of my neighborhood I also discovered a chain of ponds that were nestled against a forest. At night you'd hear frogs and toads going insane, I've never heard an amphibian population be so loud!!! I went out at night with a flashlight and some knee-high boots, and walked out into it... I could see clear to the bottom with the beam of light, and I saw a baby Snapper about smaller than my fist. He was just walking along the bottom of the pond nibbling at algea and such completely ignoring me standing over him with a flashlight right on him...

I scooped him up and had a nice close look at him, good stuff, released and left...

I come back to the same place about two months later... I fell to my knees in awe... Everything was gone... Tractors were everywhere, nothing but equiptment... The swamp-like ponds that were previously there were drained and filled... There was nothing but smooth dirt land and building equiptment... I threw an enourmous temper tanrum and slashed a few tractor tires that day...

It just pisses me off so much!!! I can't help but think, what the hell happened to the animals in that pond? That little turtle that made such an impression on me that night in the pond with my flashlight? What happens to them when this happens???

That pond that I just posted pictures of that this post is in reply too... How long 'till that's gone? How long 'till all those turtles, including the ones you saw in the pictures, are out of luck too? I'm so sick and tired of it, everything is just so driven by the lust for money. It's utterly disqusting... And the local wildlife gets crapped on...

There was a huge dirt field/grassland area that I just to walk to... Everywhere you went, toads just scattered left and right, tons of'em... They lived here, and they thrived... Now that's gone, nothing but building equiptment and barren bulldozed land...

Makes me feel disqusted to be a part of mankind...

Matt,

I feel your pain. Here in Louisiana, alligator snapping turtles are still taken legally from the wild. They are afforded special protection in every other state where they range. SOUP. That's why. Go on being disgusted with mankind; that means you're doing something right.

I was researching Snapping Turtles after we found a nest of eggs today and I typed in "Snapping Turtle" into the search bar. I scanned the first few sites and found some info, then got reading one and all of a sudden it starts telling you that once you catch them you need to soak them in clean water for 2 weeks then pull it out, Cut Off It's Head, and let it hang till the blood comes out, then Nail it's Tail to a Tree, then slice it and pull out the insides, then went on to give various recipes. OOPS, wrong type of site! Not really what I was looking for!

I know exactly how you feel! I am in AL and they are doing alot of "upgrading". They are building a new highway where there once was a creek. They cut off a section of the creek which is now drying up as we speak, and there are at least 10 snappers there, also musk turtles and frogs. These animals are doomed once the remainder of the creek dries up because they will have to cross the busy highway to get to another body of water. I managed to rescue 4 snappers and 2 musk turtles from there, but the guy that "claims" to own the land told me not to go back there because if I got "stuck in the mud" or "killed by machinery", he would be held responsible and that he could lose his insurance. I explained to him what would happen to the turtles when the place dried up and his only response was "I don't care!"
It's really sad because a big snapper got hit by a car a few days ago. At least I was able to save a few of them, but I can't help but worry myself sick over the ones that are still there. All that we can do is hope that one day people will get a clue and realize how important nature is. I know how you feel about the human race! Christy
