Desert Chameleons?

vulcan May 24, 2004 06:07 PM

Does anyone know if there are any desert types of chameleons on the pet trade? Like the Namaqua chameleon? If not, are there any that don't have very high humidity requrements? Just curious to see if there is an opposite end to the chameleon spectrum; since all types that I know of require very high humidity levels.

Hi!

The european chameleon (Chamaeleo chamaeleon) have several different locals, and some of these need a very dry climate! But It might be very (!) hard to find these in the pet trade at the moment!

Veild chameleons from the central high plains in Yemen, also live in a somewhat dry climate...

I have a few veileds, and they don't seem to be affected by the low humidity in the winters here (Canada). The humidity in my room, where i keep them, goes down to 40% for at most 2 days at a time even with an ultrasonic humidifier going full-blast and 3-4 mistings a day...in any case they have alwasy been healthy in my home and if a high-humidity environment can't be offered for any species, very good hydration will make up for the lack of humidity.

Thanks for the responce!
How would you know if a veiled chameleon is from the central high plains in Yemen? Would the pet store or breeder know the local? Is anyone breeding these at the momont? Is anyone breeding the European chameleon? Thanks for the info.
