my het male turned out being a female, what to do now...

gothpython May 24, 2004 06:55 PM

i recently purchased a het for albino male and after leaving "him" alone in his enclosure for a week i decided to take "him" out and feed him. well out of curiousity i decided to pop "him". after doing so myself i figured i'd get a second opinion and went to my local reptile shop and sure enough it turned out to be a girl. so now my question is: should i hold on to her and see if she is a het for albino or should i get a hold of the breeder i got her from and figure out what happened? what do you guys think?

I would. You may have gotten a normal by accident or just a gender mismatch.

It happens.

if it was me I would still speak to the breeder and see what happened. You don't have to give it back since you bought it, but wouldn't it be nice to hear what he has to say about it. I hope it works out you got a het female and not a normal.

The breeder deserves a chance to know about the mixup or missexing so they can improve things. Perhaps they even have pics to prove that there wasn't a mixup. At any rate, I don't think you have to give it back due to their mistake. However if they sent you a normal by accident they need to make it right.

She is worth alot more than the male. Keep her and buy a $100 male het.

where do i find them for 100 like you said?

bachman May 24, 2004 07:48 PM

Herp shows. People can't give het albino males away half the time (being sarcastic, but you know what I mean). You will be able to find "04" males for $100, but most "03" males will be $125-$150.

Find a small breeder you know or at least trust.

i'll try that again but the last time i did that, well that's why i'm here now.

Whatever you decide....Good luck & I hope it's a het you got.

OUTSTANDING!!!

I caught an earlier reply and wanted to emphasize his point... if someone screwed up with gender, then maybe they screwed up the genetics as well. If your female is not het, then it's not so outstanding after all. I'd contact the seller and start asking a lot of questions.

after reading through all these post i will be calling the breeder i got the snake from and figure out just what happened. as far as i have seen from them at a couple shows i haven't seen them selling any normals but you never know. for any of you whom may like to know, i'll keep you posted on what i find out. again thank you all.

I own that 'local reptile store'. The animal is 100% without a doubt female.

I too am now worried about the screwup being twofold. If they can blow the gender they can blow the genetics just by putting one animal in the wrong cup. One mistake becomes two quite easily.
