Comparison:Taiwans vs. Blues

Conrad May 24, 2004 07:59 PM

Well, let me clarify and specify why I named this post as is to eliminate confusion. My female taiwan just laid a gorgeous clutch of 13 eggs, two weeks after my first clutch of blues. And I noticed something right away, even though clutch sizes (14 for blue vs. 13 for taiwan), were very similar, the eggs themselves appeared quite different. I've always noticed that the taiwans tended to be more heavey bodied snakes anyway, but always just figured the differences ended there. But the first thing I noticed was that the Taiwans eggs, where probably 1/4-1/2" shorter than the blues eggs, but very much larger in diameter! I still have one female blue to lay in the next few days, so my comparison isn't complete yet, but was wondering if anyone else out there has any input into the variances between blue and taiwans, and their reproductive behaviors.

My taiwans eggs are about the same length as my blues eggs but larger around. I have noticed that my taiwans eggs are harder than my blues.
My blue has larger clutches (21 this year) than my taiwan or they might be longer. Randy W.

Ok so its not just me.. I was wondering if maybe my eggs last year were just heavily mineralized or something. I even had a hard time gutting through the shell with a razorblade, which worried me even more about the babies getting through.. lol. So they're supposed to be hard shelled eh.. wierd..

I'll have to see with this being my first year with the taiwans. I thought that my blues last year seemed pretty hard. I was awfully impressed with my female Taiwan laying 13 on her first breeding. My taiwans are also more heavy bodied than my blues though, so I wasn't too surprised that their eggs were bigger around. I know I've read it somewhere also, but who else has noticed that blues tend to like climbing more then taiwans? I think that is why they tend to be leaner bodied than the blues myself. Where as my G. oxcephala are very lean and muscular and are know climbers. In fact, I've had both a blue and a taiwan escape at one point or another(both recovered), but my blue showed up under the stove where as the taiwan was recovered climbing a bunk bed.
