Went to petcare today, they had an adult blue tailed tree monitor..

in a freaking parrot cage with nuthing to climb on, a cardboard box for a hide and a darn heat lamp attached to the side of the cage! It had to be 70 degrees in that darn store and it was so beautiful but laying their lifeless. I couldnt believe it! I was so pissed i asked for the manager and before i knew it i was being escorted from the store. I freaking snapped, they had no clue as to what this animal needs and i just couldnt muster how that was, especially being a so called pet store. I'm still mad, but in hind site i wish i couldve retrained myself and gave some advice as to how to care for it. Im no expert on tree monitors but i have read up on them enough to know that if kept in those conditions for any amount of time it would surely die. I just had to share this because its the inexperienced keepers we usually worry about ,not the so called professionals. But in this case they are one in the same.

Was this a blue tailed monitor(V. doreanus), or a Blue Tree Monitor(V. macraei)? Just out of curiosity...

The conditions are unacceptable nonetheless, but there is not any laws which prevent this negligence...heck, even if the SPCA were called in, they probably wouldn't say a thing, or notice the poor husbandry... They are clueless when it comes to reptiles... Let them stick to the dogs and cats, or at least have them get some edumucation regarding reptiles and amphibians...

just my thoughts...

It was a blue tree monitor that they had labeled as a blue tailed tree monitor. I even had to go and visit your site to confirm once i got home. Its a damn shame but i know that everything you said is true but what can you do. Just does feel right to see it.

...you could uhm...buy it, then re-sell it to a knowledgeable herper. Pretty crass, but it might work if you have the bucks. If he's not in a death spiral.
