Shipping Boxes..

ben_renick May 24, 2004 09:26 PM

Sorry, I know this isn't really about Anacondas, but I am thinking of selling my burm and she is about 6 ft. I need to find a box to ship her in, does anyone know where I could get one, or should I make one? and there aren't a whole lot of pics on here, so I will put one up again OH And if anyone wants her just ask too... I am thinking of getting another green, maybe from kelly and put him in a seperate cage and breed them in a year or two.. Either that or a Tiger Retic... I need to think of a reasonable price for her

I would find a rubbermaid container appropriately sized for the snake(remember when selecting one that it's not going to be living in it so it can be relatively small) and then drill small airholes in the lid. I would line the container with newspaper both on the floor and some waded up as well. Then, with the snake inside, I would tape it shut with duct tape. Next you need to find a cardboard box big enough to place the rubbermaid container inside of. To insulate it you can use styrofoam slabs cut to fit the inside of the box, or at the very least a lot of waded up newspaper. Make sure to pack newspaper all around the rubbermaid container to aid in absorbing impacts that surely will happen during shipping. Also be aware of the temps where your shipping to and ship it on an appropriate day.
If those pictures of your female are recent, you have more than a 'year or two' to go before attempting to breed. If you get a neonate green male it might be ready in two years but maybe three. I would say that female probably has at least 3-4 years to go before she's ready. My female is 10' and probably has two more years to go. The new male I got will probably be what holds me up for three years though. Unless I get lucky and he becomes ready in two.
Tiger retics are cool but you can probably guess I'm going to tell you to go with the conda.lol
I'll post an old pic too.

Actually, minus the styrofoam sheets, that's exactly the way I have shipped them in the past. I just packed newspaper tightly around the container.
I once had to ship an albino garter that I caught in Iowa to a guy in NC. In JANUARY! On his recomendation, I placed two of those packs, that hunters use to keep their hands warm while hunting, inside the box but not inside the rubbermaid container and the garter made it with no probs. Even though it was single digits outside.
I think that the way I described is probably what most people use. You are right though, I did borrow the idea about the styrofoam from someone else.lol.

i use snake bags when shipping a snake. it is safer and is less stressful on the animal.

Snake bags work well, as long as you have a secondary hard container within your main shipping box. This is added protection in case the outside containment gets partially crushed. It would be a rare occurrence, but it has happened.

My conda hates bags. I mean she HATES bags. So I guess there fine for some but it would actually stress mine more.

yeah its weird because the little burm i have likes bags but wont be put in a rubbermaid container. It reacts extremely aggressive even at the site of it.
