urgent shelf liner question..........

-ryan- May 24, 2004 10:12 PM

I just put a piece of shelfliner in my bearded dragon's tank tonight to replace his sand for now, because we still haven't been able to get rid of his strongylls. Now if I open his cage, there is a strong rubbery smell. This smell won't hurt him will it? It just seems a little strange.

Thanks in advance.

Is it the non-adhesive kind? I made the mistake of buying the adhesive kind at first, and it had a strong smell like you discribe. What you want is the thick rubbery kind with no adhesive, which I've never noticed having any kind of odor.

I suggest you take it out and wash it with plain water, and let it air dry fully on a hanger before using it. This will remove most if not all smell that is trapped in the liners. After some time they have no smell at all to them. When they make them they are rolled up and packaged and never have a chance to air out at all. For the first washing you can even throw them in the washing machine with just plain warm water and hang them up to dry out. No dryer or quick drying methods though, The hang dry lets it air out really good. They should not be the sticky kind, just the plain non adhesive non slip shelf liners. Good idea to have a few sets ready to put in so if one needs a full cleaning, and soaking you have another dried out and ready to go in. For parasites it might be a good idea to cover where he goes poop with paper towels to absorb the liquid and make clean up easier through this period with parasites.
